Majority of Kenyans believe they won't get a house under Ruto presidency

Majority of Kenyans are not sure whether they will be able to get a house under President William Ruto's administration.

Ruto is implementing the affordable housing project, which recently got a major boost through enactment of the Finance Act.

One of the clauses in the Act is the 1.5 per cent housing levy.

However, section of Kenyans, some of whom will make their monthly contributions are not sure if they will get a house.

Results of a survey conducted by Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) released on Tuesday, indicate that 54 per cent of responds are not sure whether Ruto's pledge of owning a house will be fulfilled.

Out of the 1,500 respondents interviewed by TIFA, 54 per cent said they do not expect to get a house, while only 11 per cent said they are optimistic of landing a house.

Under the same breadth, 15 per cent of the respondents said they possibly will or will never get a house, as 16 per cent declared they are not sure.

Most of those who believe will get a house support President Ruto's government, while those not sure support the opposition.

“Expectations are markedly shaped by political alignment, however, with five times more government supporters certain they will get a house (20 per cent) as compared to opposition supporters (4 per cent)," the TIFA report reads.

The survey was conducted between 23rd and 30th June, 2023.

Meanwhile, Azimio leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday urged his supporters to turn out in large numbers across the country on Friday, during Saba Saba meetings against the cost of living and heavy taxation.

"We have got to fight and that fight begins this coming Friday. We need unity now more than ever. By embarking on pickets, protests, tax boycotts and civil disobedience, we are not in any way advocating for violence."

He urged Azimio supporters to ensure they remain peaceful during the picketing.
