The death of a 25-year-old man identified as Caleb Otieno has baffled the workers and management of Blue Nile Rolling Mills Limited based in Thika, Kiambu County. According to reports, Caleb fell into a metal boiler on Friday afternoon, March 25, 2022.
The Blue Nile Rolling Mills is a sister company to the well known Blue Nile Wire Products Limited which manufactures barbed wires. The two companies are owned by Blue Nile Group.
In a statement, Otieno's family said that they were treating the death of their loved one with doubt and suspicion claiming that Otieno was either thrown into the boiler or the company did not adhere to the set rules of safety measures.
"The company was not willing to explain exactly what happened or own up that his brother died within the factory or bear the responsibility. His coworkers told us that he died after he fell into a boiler while working. The company has not come forward to explain exactly what happened either," a brother to the deceased said.

The Blue Nile Rolling Mills Limited are the manufacturers of the Kifaru brand of steel products and were recently awarded Ksh862 million from International Finance Corporation (IFC) which is a private lending arm of the World Bank. The funds were to help the company expand their factory in Thika, Kiambu where their main manufacturing plant is based.
Otieno left his Kisumu home for Thika nearly 10 years ago after completing his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). His first job was at Consumer Goods manufacturer, Bidco Africa, where he worked as a casual worker for three years. Later on, he landed the Blue Nile job where he worked for seven years before meeting his death. His coworkers described him as a hard worker and caring person.
Thika DCIO Joseph Thuvi said that his death was under investigation but he ruled out the claims that Otieno was thrown into the boiler. Blue Nile was officially launched back in 2006 after they acquired a steel wire product manufacturing facility in Kikuyu, Kiambu County.
Currently, the company produces steel and wire products at the Thika factory. The plant has a capacity to produce 100,000 metric tonnes of steel products and 15,700 metric tonnes of wire products.
