Man in court over imported sugar

A 30-year-old man has been fined Sh 70, 000 or in default to serve eight months’ imprisonment for being in possession of imported sugar, without clearance from the Kenya Revenue Authority.
Dennis Wambua Muli, who was arrested on July 13, 2023 at Kimana town along Loitoktok -Emali Road, while transporting 25 bags, each weighing 50 kg of imported sugar from Tanzania was fined by Principal Magistrate Judicaster Nthuku.
According to prosecution the accused was arrested as he was transporting the sugar from Loitoktok town, which had tax worth of Sh270,250.
The accused who had earlier denied the charges, pleaded guilty and in his mitigation told the court he had gone to Loitoktok town to buy maize and when he did not get it, he decided to buy sugar unaware it was Tanzanian product.
The court fined the accused and also directed him to clear with Kenya Revenue Authority within 7 days, failure to which he forfeits the sugar to the state.
