A Makueni court on Tuesday sentenced a 65-year-old man to one year in prison for defrauding Sh.5,000 from an unsuspecting Kenyan in the pretense of being able to secure a job.
Martin Kinuthia Mwangi was convicted for unlawfully obtaining sh 5,000 from John Mutua on August 2, 2023, in Makueni Sub County by falsely pretending to be in a position to secure Mutua's daughter a job at Makueni County Government.
While sentencing the accused, Makueni Chief Magistrate Peter Gesora ruled that the prosecution had proved their case beyond reasonable doubt that the accused person indeed committed the offense of fraud.
The court heard that the convict was a repeat offender and had been arrested on several occasions for defrauding community members.
"I have carefully considered the probation office report presented and it is clear that the convict is not a first-time offender, the accused has no respect for himself let alone other members of the public whom he keeps wronging. Therefore, the offender will serve one year of imprisonment," said Gesora.
According to court documents, the accused was convicted by the same court and jailed for 5 years on 17 July 2013.
After completing the jail term in 2016, he changed his name from Martin Mwaura Njoroge to his current name Martin Kinuthia Mwangi.
He has 14 days to appeal.
