Mandago arrested

By Peter Ochieng

Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Arap Mandago has been arrested.

The former governor has been a wanted man, in connection to the reported loss of Sh1.1 billion Uasin Gishu county Overseas Education Trust Scholarship Fund.

He was reportedly arrested in Eldoret, and taken to Nakuru, where a court has issued warrant of his arrest.

The legislature is at the centre of the scholarship fund scandal, after dozens of parents sold their property such as land and cattle to facilitate their children’s studies in Finland and Canada.

That was however not to be as hundreds of students were left stranded and scores of parents reeling from losses.

Before his arrest, he denied claims of hiding from police.

“There are rumors all over Eldoret Town that DCI Officers have been looking for me the whole night. As a law-abiding citizen, I am available once summoned,” he stated.

President Ruto, speaking in Uasin Gishu where he has pitched-tent due to the ongoing devolution conference, said those who misappropriated the funds must repay.

“The issue of Finland I know we have problems; parents gave out money and it is not clear where that money is. If there is anyone who misappropriated that money, he/she should plan to repay or they will be in trouble. There is no pleading with anybody. Anyone who sold land or cattle must have his or her money refunded,” said Ruto.

Mandago served as the first governor of Uasin Gishu county from 2013 to 2022.

He was instrumental in rolling out the first face of the Finland scholarships.
