In a proactive move to combat illegal logging and promote environmental conservation, Marakwet West Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) John Chirchir has proposed a unique and green approach to penalise those who engage in the unlawful felling of trees.

The DCC suggested that individuals caught cutting down trees should be mandated to plant 100 trees for each one they fell.

This idea was shared during a tree planting exercise held at Kaparmagai forest in the Kimnai location of Lelan ward by the DCC who pointed out that while prosecution may have its merits, it does not offer a solution to the irreversible damage caused by illegal logging.

Moreover, he argued that jail terms and fines do little to restore the lost green cover. "Simply prosecuting individuals involved in illegal logging may serve as a deterrent, but it won't resurrect the trees they fell. We propose to make them actively contribute to the environment's restoration by planting many trees as a form of restitution," stated the DCC.

Emphasizing the urgency of environmental conservation, the DCC urged all residents to participate in tree-planting initiatives saying that collective efforts were essential to combat deforestation and mitigate the impact of climate change.

The DCC called upon community leaders, including chiefs, to proactively safeguard the region's forests.

Addressing local chiefs directly, the DCC issued a stern directive, stating, "Under your watch, no tree should be cut illegally. It is your responsibility to ensure the protection of our forests, and I expect your full cooperation in preserving our natural heritage."

The tree planting exercise itself served as a tangible example of the commitment to environmental conservation during which community members, government officials, and local leaders joined forces to plant a variety of indigenous tree species, aiming to rejuvenate the Kaparmagai forest.

The approach suggested by the Marakwet West Deputy County Commissioner not only seeks to punish illegal loggers but also actively involves them in restoring the environment they have harmed.

As the community rallies behind this green initiative, it is hoped that the proposal will act as a catalyst for sustainable practices and a renewed sense of environmental responsibility in the region.
