South West Kisumu Member of County Assembly Ms. Jennifer Obonyo has unveiled a programme targeting to improve the road network within the ward.
“I want to appeal to residents of South ward whom I know that being a rainy season they are passing through a hectic time occasioned by the terrible status of the local roads but I implore them to be patient and let me handle things,” said Obonyo.
She said, “It’s my plea that you maintain peace because I pass by the works office as a daily routine and I have put enough pressure on them to prioritize our area because ours is a black cotton soil which when it rains, even themselves they will not be able to do any work on thus every morning, I am at the works department pushing for this.”
Obonyo pointed out that she has had a difficult time ensuring that the roads within the ward are factored in the budget given that she inherited very many dilapidated roads.
“I want you people to know that I took over the reins when not even a single road in the ward had been factored in the budget or even allocated resources that forced me to do a new budget and allocate money for roads; I allocated Sh. 4 million for Obambo to Oyieng’o road and Sh 2 million for Otodo to Ruta,” she said.
She said that securing funds for road allocation was not easy because it is a process. “Right now, the County is going through the BQs from where it will go to procurement so that tendering for roads can be done so that qualified companies can bid; we are glad because work on the identified roads will soon start,” she noted.
Obonyo said that it was her pledge when she assumed office that the road networks would be worked on and made smooth and navigable and the roads were to be done machine based.
“Our engineers declined going the machine way because the roads were in deplorable status and I honored my pledge and allocated money for the roads as I promised hence works on the roads will begin once the due processes are done,” she noted.
She noted that she was working closely with the county government of Kisumu to ensure the contracts for the road works are awarded and work on the roads commenced.
“I know it is raining and this has complicated work somehow including now making the bad roads impassable but it’s my plea to the residents to just maintain calm as the county is on it and works on the roads shall soon be over because the county want to do a good job that will even be above reproach by the anti-corruption team but first the contractors have to procure the letter of contract.
