Bungoma Deputy Governor Janepher Mbatiany has urged the media in the country to execute their mandate without bias or favour.
Addressing Bungoma journalists during celebrations to mark the World Press Freedom Day at the County Commissioner’s offices Wednesday, Mbatiany recognized the Fourth Estate as the key watchdog in the society.
“Without the media, the world would be in darkness. As we mark this great day, I want to appreciate the media for their role in informing the society on daily happenings,” she said.
The deputy governor went on to say that the media has been very instrumental as an intermediary between the government and the people, as well as offering a unique platform for the public to directly participate in developmental matters.
However, she urged the media fraternity to uphold professionalism in execution of their watchdog function.
"Even as you execute your duties and set the public agenda, always report without bias," she added.
The Bungoma Deputy County governor assured the press that the county administration is committed to ensuring journalists easily access information of public interest and adde that Governor Ken Lusaka has created a conducive environment for the media to perform their duties efficiently.
Mbatiany called upon the public, stakeholders and the two levels of governments to accord the press their freedom as enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution.
“Let us all accord the media their freedom. The world deserves to know, it is not a request, it is the law,” she affirmed.
Mbatiany urged media practitioners to embrace technology, noting that the world was moving towards a digital platform, which also provided a source of income.
Speaking during the same forum, local NTV journalist Jesse Chege called on members of the media fraternity to continue pursuing their work with dedication, integrity and commitment to the principles of press freedom.
Chege noted it was important to remember the crucial role that journalists play in exposing societal vices like corruption, while ensuring accountability.
