Meru Deputy Governor Isaac Mutuma M'ithinkia was on Wednesday night grilled at Meru County Criminal Investigations offices over the chaos that erupted during a Sunday Okolea programme by the Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

During the event that was held in Makiri, Maua town, irate residents stormed and disrupted the event and burnt down mattresses, and slaughtered a cow that was set to be donated by the governor.

The Deputy Governor said he was summoned to write what he knew about the event.

“I don’t know anything about the programme and I am also surprised why security officers are giving so much attention to this unlike the incidences of insecurity and banditry that are claiming people’s lives in the Northern grazing zone.

He said the Meru people do not need the Okolea programme as it leads to dependency on free things and instead, they should be empowered to fend for themselves.

“The people of Meru need sustainable development including good roads, water, and health among other tangible projects,” said M’Etinkia.

Recently, a fallout between Governor Mwangaza and M’Ethinkia ensued which has brought mixed reactions from the residents.

M’Ethinkia said he has since been chased out of cabinet meetings, his office was closed, his vehicles are not being fueled, his secretary, driver, PA were fired, and his office administrator transferred.

He called on the governor to reconsider her position and reconcile with the County leaders in order to foster development projects in the region.

The Deputy Governor was accompanied by his lawyer Marius Maranya who said his client was literally arrested as they were escorted by police officers from Maua to the DCI offices. “The Deputy Governor was released under free bond and he is expected to report back to the offices on Tuesday next week,” said Mr Maranya.
