Miguna Miguna applies for DPP position

By Peter Ochieng

Lawyer Joshua Miguna Miguna is among Kenyans eyeing the position of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The vocal advocate confirmed in a statement on Twitter that he had applied for the position.

"For the avoidance of any doubt, yes, I have applied for the position of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Cheers," he wrote.

The DPP position fell vacant last month, when Noordin Haji was appointed Director General, National Intelligence Service (NIS).

A section of Kenyans claimed that if Miguna lands the position, he will even jail president William Ruto due to his no nonsense attitude, and fidelity to the rule of law.

"Huyu atafunga hata Ruto (This one will even jail Ruto)," said Ken Bett.

However, in a rejoinder, Miguna said under the constitution, the president is immune to prosecution.

He added that it is not the role of DPP to jail anyone.

"Under the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, the President is immune from criminal and civil proceedings. Lastly, the DPP prosecutes. It’s the Kenya judiciary that has the mandate to jail those it has convicted."

Qualified Kenyans who wish to serve as the next DPP have until Wednesday, 12th July, 2023 at 5pm to submit their applications.

The seven-member DPP selection committee was commissioned on June 27, 2023.

It comprises among others COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) CEO Twalib Mbarak and Solicitor General Shadrack Mose.
