Morara Kebaso: ‘I am the official opposition leader’

By Peter Ochieng

Firebrand lawyer David Morara Kebaso has declared himself the official opposition leader.

He has declared himself the ‘natural heir’ to the void left, after Azimio leader Raila Odinga led his troops into forming the broad-based government with President William Ruto.

Morara has come up with a brand-new style of politics – touring parts of the country exposing wastage of public resources, in a bid to sensitise Kenyans on corruption in government.

His mission entails visiting stalled projects and those that have not started, despite being launched and money being allocated. He has attracted criticism from government operatives, with Hon Mwanaisha Chidzuga, Deputy Government Spokesperson being the latest one to call him out.

She urged Kebaso to use the same zeal in showcasing government projects fully completed. But speaking during an interview on Radio Maisha on Tuesday morning, Kebaso said as the ‘leader of opposition,’ his role is not to defend the government.

“As the leader of the opposition, my role is not to defend the government. The government has enough people to defend it,” said the lawyer cum businessman turned activist.

“The government has a spokesman, there is a director for delivery management, we have Cabinet Secretaries, we have Principal Secretaries and there are Members of Parliament. Those people are many and are all paid by the taxpayers.”

“If it is true that there is a project completed by the government without claims of corruption coming up, let them show us,” he added.

Kebaso’s modus operandi has seen him attract a huge following on social media, especially the X platform where Kenyans are now sharing information and photos of projects launched by various government officials including President Wiliam Ruto, only to stall at various stages of implementation.

Some of his posts are aimed at Kenyans whom he accuses of supporting ‘corrupt politicians.’

“If you are struggling to pay bills and you are here defending corrupt politicians who have stolen money meant to build your opportunities, you need to stay in the Morara University of Civic Education and Applied Sense. I will not give up on you until I educate you properly. You are my business. Even if you abuse me, I will still commit myself to educate you painfully. I must help you because if I make you wiser, I have made a better voter. You are my business,” he said in one of his posts.

As a result of his criticism, he said he has received offers to join the government, but has decided to stay put.
