The newly renovated and fully equipped GFB Antenatal and Postnatal Ward at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has been officially unveiled by the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Mr. Harry Kimtai.

This milestone project, valued at KSh 50 million and funded by the MPESA Foundation, encompasses extensive infrastructure upgrades, modern furnishings, and enhancements to medical beds, all aimed at improving maternal care at Kenya’s largest referral hospital.

The MPESA Foundation's support extended beyond the ward upgrades, with donations of critical equipment designed to bolster KNH’s disaster preparedness and emergency response capabilities.

This state-of-the-art equipment includes an emergency tent, trauma beds, blood pressure machines, splints, and a C-ARM Machine (Image Intensifier). The contributions reflect the Foundation’s steadfast commitment to strengthening the country’s healthcare system.

During the unveiling ceremony, PS Kimtai commended the MPESA Foundation for its visionary contribution, noting its potential to significantly enhance patient outcomes during emergencies and crises.

The equipment and facility upgrades come at a crucial time, particularly in light of recent disasters that have tested the resilience of Kenya’s healthcare system, including the Embakasi fire, the devastating April floods, and the June protests over the anti-finance bill.

“This partnership exemplifies the power of collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders in delivering tangible improvements to healthcare infrastructure,” said PS Kimtai. “The MPESA Foundation’s support ensures that KNH is better equipped to respond effectively during crises and deliver high-quality maternal care.”

The upgraded GFB Antenatal and Postnatal Ward is expected to improve comfort, safety, and care for mothers and their newborns, further solidifying KNH’s role as a leading healthcare provider in the region.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to build a more resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the challenges posed by both everyday medical needs and unforeseen disasters.
