A Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Division One Zone B match between Compel FC and Bungoma Superstars FC descended into chaos on Saturday after fans of Compel FC reportedly attacked Kitale-based assistant referee, Esther Uhuru.

The incident, which took place at Bungoma High School, forced officials to call off the match in the 58th minute amid rising tensions on the field and in the stands.

Witnesses indicated that the violence erupted following a series of contentious calls made during the heated derby. The situation escalated as a group of Compel FC fans vented their frustration by targeting the assistant referee, resulting in her assault.

The attack has sparked widespread condemnation across Kenya's football fraternity. Newly elected Trans Nzoia County FKF Chairman, Isaac Munene, issued a strong statement condemning the violence, calling it "entirely unacceptable" and a blatant disregard for the values that the sport upholds.

“Such behavior is entirely unacceptable and goes against the core values of football. Match officials are integral to ensuring fair play and the smooth running of the game, and any act of violence or intimidation against them must not be tolerated,” Munene said.

He further urged the FKF to take swift and decisive action to hold the perpetrators accountable. Munene highlighted the need to protect the integrity of football in Kenya and emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all stakeholders involved in the game.

Fans across social media have also took their concerns condemning the incident.

"Assault on match officials is highly unacceptable, sanctions and fines should follow."Gerald Bob said.

"FKF should strictly insist that this games should be played in safe stadia for the safety of the players and officials."Moses omondi remarked.

"Dark day in football ,,this shouldn't be happening in this age !" said Emorut Tobias.

"This scenario should be dealt with the cruel punishment too serve as an example to other teams in Kenya" Kibet Nelson said.

The FKF is expected to launch an investigation into the incident, with the goal of identifying those responsible and taking measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Such acts of violence have raised concerns about the safety of match officials and the need for stricter security measures during games to maintain order and uphold the spirit of sportsmanship.
