As the Municipality of Eldoret waits to be elevated into the city, the Municipality board has called on all landlords and tenants to ensure their buildings are painted with standard plain colours while at the same time urging residents to observe proper waste disposal mechanisms to ensure the town remains clean.
The municipality of Eldoret manager Tito Koiyet pointed out that the board in February issued an enforcement notice guiding all the landlords and tenants to adhere to that enforcement notice.
“Part of that notice was to ensure that buildings are painted with colours which are not associated with any known commercial brand, those protected like banks and other corporate entities should seek authorization from the authority.
We need all the buildings painted plain. All the signage and advertisements are supposed to be in the right place and in accordance with the laws that guide advertisements and the management of buildings in our towns. Landlords should ensure buildings are accessible to People Living with Disabilities, the aged, and children as well,” he said.
Noting that the Notice expired on 23rd August 2023 which translates to a period of 6 months since it was issued, the municipality manager warned the people that action provided for in the enforcement notice will be taken against them to ensure compliance with regulation and the by-laws of the municipality of Eldoret.
Mr. Tito further reiterated the need for the public to change their attitude on handling solid waste.
He said there are individuals like hotel and restaurant operators who have a tendency to dump ashes in the public dustbins designated for solid waste only. He called for proper waste disposal mechanisms to ensure the town remains clean.
“People should use the litter bins as they should be, they are not dumpsites for waste from their premises, restaurants, and others,” he said.
On his part, the Municipality Board Chairman Julius Kitur urged all the residents to maintain the cleanliness of the town by disposing solid waste in the designated litter bins around the Eldoret CBD and its environs.
“We have the law that allows us to arrest anybody who is going to throw even a leaf on the street, even a banana peeling, we are going to act on that strictly to ensure that our town is clean,” he warned.
Kitur called for public sensitization on the proper waste disposal and management mechanisms to ensure the municipality remains clean as it readies to be elevated into city status soon.
