Public health facilities within 11 Sub-Counties of Nakuru have received drugs and medical supplies worth Sh26 million.
Governor Susan Kihika said the assorted medication have been delivered to 180 health facilities within the devolved unit including Nakuru Level 6 hospital, Naivasha and Gilgil Sub-County Hospitals and dispensaries across the region.
“We now have adequate stocks of drugs in all our health facilities. We are topping up the supplies to ensure that residents have an adequate access to preventive and treatment drugs,” stated Kihika.
The governor said the County administration had put in place continuous health infrastructural improvement programmes by equipping health facilities with medical diagnostic and treatment equipment.
Speaking at the County headquarters Friday, Kihika disclosed that her administration had formulated a health management information system that monitors use of drugs in health facilities.
The governor indicated that the devolved unit had purchased the drugs from the Mission for Essential Drugs (MEDS) to ensure uninterrupted supply of medicines.
She said that her administration had put in place strategies to ensure an affordable and reliable supply of drugs and medical equipment to all health facilities in the county.
Kihika said the county administration had put in place water tight monitoring and evaluation measures that guarantee only deserving cases get drugs and that they do not end up in private chemists.
“There is a high level of accountability as we ensure that returns of all drugs and medical equipment delivered to health facilities are made by relevant authorities,” she asserted.
Kihika assured the residents that there were adequate drugs and medical equipment at all Level 2 facilities (dispensaries), Level 3 hospitals (Health Centers) hospitals and 15 low volume Level 4 hospitals across the county.
“This marks the sixth tranche of medicines and non-pharmaceuticals that the County Government of Nakuru under my leadership is disbursing to our public hospitals. Early last month, we disbursed medicines worth Sh23, 693,123 from the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) to public hospitals,” stated the County boss.
She added “In August, I flagged off medicines and non-pharmaceuticals worthy Sh97,855,777 to all our dispensaries, health centres and low volume Level 4 hospitals across the county. On 30th of May, 2023, I disbursed a consignment of drugs and non-pharmaceuticals worth Sh49 million to our hospitals.
Kihika observed that in March the devolved unit had disbursed a consignment of drugs and non-pharmaceuticals worth Sh50 million barely three weeks after disbursing a Sh93 million worth drugs consignment to health facilities across the devolved unit.
“Next week, the County Government is receiving the Yellow Fever vaccine, which will be dispensed at our County Inoculation Centre. The Centre is the only facility gazetted for purposes of administering the Yellow Fever Vaccine in Nakuru,” she noted.
She assured the residents that her administration was working with various partners in both the public and private sectors to facilitate delivery of better services within public health facilities.
“Towards ending the shortage of drugs and non-pharmaceuticals in hospitals, we are also modernizing our health facilities through acquisition of technologies to deliver services in a better way,” she added.
