Some sixty-three women and youth groups across Nandi County, have received funding of Sh.6.5 million from the National Government Affirmative Action (NGAAF), to empower themselves economically.

Speaking during the event at Kapsabet town, Nandi NGAAF Coordinator, Mr George Ondong’a, urged the beneficiaries to use the money to initiate income generating projects.

He said the groups that have received funding, will be required to file a report every three months, indicating how the money has been spent, while reiterating on the importance of accountability.

“Let us spend the money wisely and prudently on projects that will guarantee value addition, to improve our social and economic status,” he advised.

During the event, women were offered health care services which included, medical consultation on mental health, courtesy of Equity Bank and later on financial literacy training courtesy of Joyful Women Organization (JOYWO).

“After six months, you can be funded again if you are doing tangible work,” said Terry Maiyo, the Chairperson of NGAAF in Nandi County.

Mr. Wilpher Rono from JOYWO explained to the attendees how table banking works, adding that women who have embraced the idea are now rich and famous

Equity Regional Manager, Jonathan Kimolo, said with the new partnership, Equity Bank will offer training to women groups across the County, when called to do so. The training areas will include: Record keeping, budgeting, Investment opportunities, entrepreneurship, and agribusiness and value addition.

“My only appeal is for the group members to trust one another and do projects in unison. Let us avoid infighting, because it will lead to bankruptcy,” he advised.

Mrs. Phillister Maiyo, who represented County Women Representative, Cynthia Muge, during the event said, despite the Women Representative office receiving low funding, it has been able to do great deeds.

“The Office has been able to offer full scholarships to 207 high school students and 60 adults for mature entry to technical training institutes,” said Maiyo.

Women group leaders expressed their joy after receiving the cheques, stating that Sh. 100,000 each group will receive, will help them initiate economic projects, so that they can be able to take care of their families.

According to Rebecca Cheruiyot, who spoke on behalf of the group leaders, 10 percent of the interest earned by the money, will be used to finance education among the group members, as many members wish to join polytechnics and technical training institutes.
