The Narok county government has sponsored 500 motorcycle riders to attend a driving school to acquire skills and obtain driving licenses.
Speaking during the Narok Bodaboda Association Annual General Meeting, Governor Patrick Ntutu, the chief guest, stated that the county government will accord the beneficiaries a sponsorship of Sh3.5 million, with a deposit of Sh600,000, already made to Moran Driving School.
He further on pledged to construct over 10 shades in town to protect riders from the harsh weather conditions including rains and to minimize commotion in town.
Ntutu highlighted the significant contribution of the bodaboda sector, which employs over 1.5 million people and generates Sh300 billion annually to the national economy.
The governor noted with satisfaction that the charge for motorcycle stickers has been reduced from Sh300 to Sh200, which is a great relief for motorcycle riders due to the high cost of living.
County Commissioner, Isaac Masinde urged the motorcycle riders to observe the traffic rules and produce driving licenses whenever required.
He also assured residents of security, amid extended curfew hours to 10.00pm in Narok town due to reported insecurity cases.
Lemayian Punyua, chairman of the Bodaboda Association, highlighted the significant challenges faced by motorcycle riders, including insecurity, accidents, lack of employment, and lack of driving licenses.
Punyua emphasized the shared responsibility of road safety, urging riders to have two helmets and two reflectors for their own protection and for passengers in case of an accident.
