Number of Kenyans registered by political parties revealed

By Peter Ochieng Over 24.5 million Kenyans have been registered by various political parties in the Country, as the August 9, 2022, general elections draw closer. According to the registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu, 24.5 million Kenyans have been registered in 82 political parties. She made the announcement on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, during a press conference, after receiving the party membership list over the weekend. “We have 24,571,400 registered members in political parties in the country. In the list 15 million are male while 8.6 M are female. 82 political parties have submitted their lists,” she said. "The political parties’ membership list will be certified by April 2, ahead of the primaries," added Nderitu. After that, the register of political parties is expected to present the list to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in readiness for nominations. “The deadline for submission of certified party membership register to IEBC is 9th April.” She revealed that as at March 28, 912 Kenyans had expressed interest of vying for various positions as independent candidates. Various political parties in the Country are gearing up for party nominations, expected to conclude towards the end of April, 2022. Raila Odinga led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will hold nominations from April 01 to April 24, 2022 in 21 Counties across the Country, while Deputy President led UDA will hold party primaries on April 14. Ford Kenya party has earmarked April 12-18 as dates for nominations. "Ford-Kenya National election and nominations board led by Dr. Samson Muchelule is ready for the task and has this afternoon assured our aspirants of FREE, FAIR and CREDIBLE primaries from 12th-18th April," said party leader Moses Wetang'ula on March 26, 2022. "I wish them well as I call on the candidates to adhere to the party rules and IEBC regulations," he added.
