Nyamira residents publicly participate in county’s budgeting process

Nyamira County residents have appreciated the National Treasury for involving them in a public participation exercise in the budget making process.
The agriculture, education and health are key areas majority of Nyamira residents want prioritized in resource allocation.
Mr. Abel Mokaya, a farmer in Nyamira said the public participation forum was very timely because it has given the ordinary Mwananchi the opportunity to prioritize and give input on areas where more resources should be allocated to spur the county’s economic growth.
“Majority of us ordinary citizens in Nyamira eke our living from agriculture, but we strain on the farms to manage meager earning from proceeds we make. That is the reason why we request the government to allocate more resources to the agriculture sector to enable us procure machines and the necessary accessories to improve our farming techniques through mechanization which will improve the quantity and quality of the yield in farming ventures.” Mokaya suggested.
Another resident, Mary Moraa, a retired civil servant pointed out that education is another sector, where budgeting priority needs to be considered to enable children access quality education up to the university level to save parents from the high cost of sustaining their children studying in counties far from home.
“Our county does not have a single university institution, our polytechnics and technical training and institutions are ill equipped with limited courses for our students to choose their dream technical training of interest. We request the National Treasury in conjunction with that of education to allocate resources for the construction of a university in Nyamira,” Moraa proposed.
Other areas where residents emphasized for consideration include health, roads, social protection services, security, investments and cooperatives.
Allan Macharia, the team leader of officers from national treasury commended the passionate and active participation of residents and said it will be a proper guide during budgeting at the national treasury to enable the department allocate resources prudently, where they are most needed and will improve the livelihood of people and in return motivate them to spur undertake income generating ventures which will increase revenue for the country.
Onesmus Kyatha, Nyamira County commissioner who was coordinating the public participation forum reminded residents present that they have a lion’s share of decision making on what they need done for them in their county because they best understand their needs and gaps, which require money instead of allocating money blindly before assessing the immediate and pressing needs.
