Some 11,840 students from needy backgrounds in Nyeri have been awarded education bursaries by the county government bursary programme, Elimu Fund.

The list of beneficiaries comprises secondary school and for the first time, special school students. Other beneficiaries include college, polytechnic and university students from the six sub-counties in the county.

Beneficiaries from boarding secondary schools got Sh 6,000, while those from colleges received Sh 4,000 while students in special schools were awarded Sh 5000 sponsorship whereas polytechnic students got Sh 6000 and their university counterparts received Sh 7,000 cheques respectively.

Speaking when he issued cheques worth Sh 40 million to the beneficiaries at the Asian Quarters Bus terminus, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga reiterated his commitment to supporting the education sector to ensure that each child in the county is accorded a chance to learn.

“These bursaries bring major benefits for students from disadvantaged backgrounds and should be maintained alongside outreach programmes,” said Kahiga.

The county boss noted a total of Sh 100 million had been set aside in 2023/2024 financial year to go towards the county’s Elimu Fund bursary.
