One person masquerading as a lawyer was arrested at the Kangema law courts after members of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) embarked on an operation to root out quack lawyer.

The suspect, who is now waiting to be arraigned in court was apprehended, when he tried to represent unsuspecting members of the public before a magistrate’s court.

A member of the LSK, Stephen Mbugua while addressing the press Thursday, said some fake lawyers have been duping the public, defrauding them residents of their hard earned cash.

Mbugua noted the fake lawyers purport to prepare legal documents like sale agreements, thereby swindling people of their money.

He added that the crackdown is being carried out countrywide to flush out all impostors purporting to offer the services of an advocate.

Mbugua urged members of the public to be vigilant and always confirm the authenticity of those offering them legal services by insisting on checking their licenses, since some secretaries have taken up the role of signing legal documents, which is the sole responsibility of lawyers.

On his part, the chairman of LSK Murang’a Practice centre, Mbue Ndegwa said they will be conducting operations in all local courts to ensure those masquerading as advocates are smoked out.

He called for collaborative efforts between the advocates, members of the public and the relevant government authorities to ensure citizens don’t fall prey to quack lawyers.

LSK is determined to deal decisively with the problem of fake lawyers, who have been exploiting Kenyans over the years.

However, citizens end up losing such cases, added Ndegwa, urging people to first get credentials of lawyers, whom they hire to represent them in court.
