Residents from two villages within Ndhiwa constituency have blamed the Kenya Power Company for failing to restore power after an electricity transformer supplying power in the area broke down more than two weeks ago.
The residents, including traders from Maranyona and Riat villages in Kanyidoto and Kanyikela wards respectively, lamented that lack of electricity has increased insecurity in the area and also contributed to business losses.
Speaking to journalists, Amoyo market traders said the situation had paralyzed their business operations and rendered most of them jobless, especially Jua kali artisans.
Fredric Otieno, a resident from Maranyona village, said power disruption has not only affected businesses, but also health facilities in the area.
"Amoyo dispensary is also among the health facilities that have been affected by the situation," he said.
They blamed Kenya Power for delaying in replacing the transformer, despite raising several complaints.
"The transformer fell down more than two weeks ago but we have not seen officials from Kenya Power coming in, even after our attempts to notify them of the problem," said Otieno.
The residents are now appealing to the power company to swing into action and replace the damaged transformer, so that they can resume their daily business activities.
