President Ruto Graces 8th edition of the Turkana Tourism and Cultural Festival

President William Ruto donned in a colorful traditional Turkana attire of Shukas, Leather sandals and bead and feather waived hat as he graced the 8th edition of the Turkana Tourism and Cultural Festival in Lodwar on Friday. 

The Festival traditionally known as Tobong'u Lore(Welcome back home) , is an annual event that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Turkana people. Bringing together communities from Kenya and neighboring countries, the vibrant festival showcases traditional dances, music, arts and crafts.

It serves as a unique platform for promoting peace, unity and tourism in the region while preserving the distinctive customs and traditions of the Turkana community.

This year's event scheduled from 23rd to 26th October 2024 at Ekalees Cultural Centre Lodwar is Themed at “Celebrating our Culture to Promote Tourism, Peaceful Co-existence, and Climate Resilience for Sustainable Developments.” 

"Culture builds social capital, the glue binding communities. Festivals and fairs foster solidarity, inclusion, empowerment, and capacity-building by bringing people together.  

Cultural experiences offer leisure, learning, entertainment, and economic opportunities while encouraging shared connections. "President Ruto said in a statement. 

Tobong’u Lore is a vibrant celebration, offering a unique window into the rich culture of the Turkana people. With its traditional dances, music, and crafts, the festival not only preserves heritage but also strengthens community pride.

The participation of prominent leaders, including H.E The President, highlights the event’s significance in promoting tourism and fostering unity. 

Festivals like these play a crucial role in boosting the local economy, encouraging sustainable tourism, and creating global awareness about Kenya’s diverse cultural heritage.

The President announced the development of Kenya: Home of Human Origins Museum and Science Park at Namortunga Kalokol — a transformative project for scientific research, cultural tourism, and eco-tourism.  

Earlier, he launched Phase 1 of Lodwar Town Street’s upgrade to bitumen standard.
