By Peter Ochieng

Kamau Thugge is set to become the next Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) governor.

President William Ruto on Monday nominated Kamau Thugge, to succeed Dr. Patrick Njoroge who has been at the helm for 8 years.

Felix Koskei, Head of Public Service in a statement said Thugge’s nomination followed a competitive recruitment process carried out by the Public Service Commission (PSC).

Until his nomination, the former Principal Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Finance has been serving as a senior advisor and Head of Fiscal and Budget Policy in the president’s office.

Thugge is also a member of President Ruto's Economic Council, headed by economist David Ndii.

He was accused, alongside former Cabinet Secretary for Finance Henry Kosgei of allegedly inflating a commercial loan for construction of Arror and Kimwarer dams in Elgeyo Marakwet county.

The case against him was however dropped in 2021, before being turned into a State witness.

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed him PS in 2013.

Before then, he worked as a senior economic adviser in the Ministry of Finance from 2010.

Thugge held various positions at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 1985 to 2010.
