Uhuru immortalised in Zimbabwe

By Joshua Cheloti President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to be honoured in Zimbabwe with one of the streets named after him. It is reported that the street named after Uhuru will be unveiled when the president will be visiting the South African country. The head of state is scheduled to visit Zimbabwe later this April to officially open the 2022 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF). A street that has been named after him is expected to be in the City of Bulawayo. [caption id="attachment_14566" align="alignnone" width="2048"]File image of President Uhuru Kenyatta. |Photo| Courtesy| File image of President Uhuru Kenyatta. |Photo| Courtesy|[/caption] Among the streets in the city proposed to be named after President Uhuru Kenyatta include Hillside Road from Samuel Parirenyatwa to Cecil Avenue, 12th Avenue Extension from Samuel Parirenyatwa to Cecil Avenue, and Banff Road towards Hillside Dams. The Zimbabwean government led by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa through Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo had written a letter to Bulawayo City Council (BCC) requesting for the street to be named in honor of Uhuru. “We have received a request to name a street in the City of Bulawayo after the President of Kenya, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta in terms of the Names (Alteration) Act Chapter 10:14,” the City Council stated. The naming of the street after Uhuru is part of efforts aimed at enhancing bilateral ties between Kenya and Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe will not be the first African country to have a street in its city named after a Kenyan president. Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya’s founding father has a 0.12 kilometres Street named after him in Enugu State, Nigeria. The late president was also honoured in Sierra Leone with the naming of a road after him – the Jomo Kenyatta Road next to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation located in the Western area of Sierra Leone. It is 1.1 kilometers long. Former retired President Mwai Emilio Kibaki has also been honoured in Tanzania after the former Old Bagamoyo Road in Dar-Salaam was renamed Mwai Kibaki road. Several Kenyan streets are also named after other leaders among them former Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere who has a street named after him in Nairobi – Julius Nyerere Road. Former Ghana president Kwame Nkurumah also has a road named after him in Mombasa, the Nkrumah Road.
