The Executive Office of the President is set to spearhead vibrant celebrations in honor of Minorities Rights Day at the prestigious Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi on Monday 18th December, 2023 presided over by H.E. The President of the Republic of Kenya.
Minorities Rights Day, observed annually on December 18th, marks a significant milestone in the international commitment to safeguarding the rights of minority populations.
In retrospect, its roots trace back to 1992 when the United Nations formally adopted the UN Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious, and Linguistic Minorities—a testament to the dedication to principles of equality and inclusivity.
In line with the Constitutional provision for all-inclusive growth and shared prosperity, H.E. The President vide Executive Order No. 2 of 2023 established the Minority and Marginalized Affairs Unit in the Executive Office of the President. Part of the mandate of the Unit is to spearhead the recognition and protection of the rights of minorities.
From the press statement sent to newsrooms, December 18th is designated as the United Nations Day for the Minorities (since 1992) and Kenya will join the rest of the world in marking the day for the first time this year.
The theme for this year's Minorities Rights Day 2023 is "Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion," emphasizing the importance of embracing diversity for inclusive societies where all individuals are valued and respected.
Further, the day which is dedicated to advancing the cause of minority rights in Kenya also aims to raise awareness and shed light on the critical importance of safeguarding the rights of minority communities and highlight the challenges they face.
Additionally, the day also advocates for the development and implementation of inclusive policies that address the specific needs and concerns of diverse minority groups.
Moreover, the occasion strives to empower minority communities by fostering their active participation in society’s political, social, and economic spheres.
According to the statement, Minorities Rights Day aims to take a strong stance against discrimination by endorsing initiatives that ensure equal access to education, employment, and various opportunities for minority groups.
Nevertheless, the ultimate goal of this day is to foster social cohesion and promote a sense of unity among all citizens, irrespective of their minority status. This will contribute to the cultivation of an inclusive and harmonious society.
