Prisons officers interested in sports may soon have a special unit to provide them with adequate time for training, while still doing their daily jobs.

North Eastern Regional prisons commander Shaban Mahero made these remark during Inter- zonal cross country championship for the prison officers along the Garissa – Bura road Saturday, while responding to concerns from a section of the stakeholders that the officers don’t get enough time to train and that they were only called during such competitions.

“Full time training for officers is happening in other parts of the country and it is only in this region where it is not being done. Our regional coach will select and organize time to practice accordingly,” Mahero said.

“The teams I have comprise of officers from Garissa and Wajir. In Mandera we have sportspersons who were ready to come, but because of security challenges they could not travel. There is potential in the north eastern, in the last national competitions we were position five and we hope to improve the performance this year,” he added.

The inter zonal competitions held today were used to select a team that will represent the region in the national prisons’ completions in Ruiru Prison Training college on 20th January next year.

Among those selected for the 10 kilometer race included Abdirahim Ibrahim Ali, Shahido Aden Abdi and Caleb Kimanthi as well as Abdirahaman Hassan, Aden Hussen, Yussuf yaqub, Conny Mutheu, Suada Issack and Kaltuma Kanchoru for the 2 kilometer race.
