PS Omollo warns against use of social media to share fake exam materials

By Peter Ochieng

Kenyans stand warned against the use of social media platforms to share fake examination materials.

Three national exams start on Monday across the country, as government officials work round the clock to detect and prevent cheating.

The exams are Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).

Over three million candidates are set for the exams.

Principal Secretary (PS) for Interior on Saturday said the government will be on the look out for those who will share fake exam papers on social media platforms such as Signal, WhatsApp and Telegram among others.

“False publications to mislead students and fraudulent use of electronic devices to send false information attracts a fine of up to Sh20 million and imprisonment,” said the PS.

He spoke at the St. George Primary School in Nairobi.

The PS stated that at least 60, 000 security officers have been deployed across the country in a bid to secure the exam centres.

“The Ministry of Interior will play a leading and critical role in the execution of the task, supporting the Ministry of Education in coordination, logistics and provision of 24-hour security during the examination exercise,” he added.

“Exam impersonation will not be tolerated either by people impersonating the candidates or people purporting to be officials of the examinations."

His education counterpart Belio Kipsang said all cheating loopholes have been sealed.

“Early exposure has been an issue. Teachers picking exams at 6am and staying with them is a concern. This time we will pick exams twice in a bid to curb exams early exposure.”

“Leakage has been misillustrated, it is a very serious offense. Having an exam prior to the exam day is a global crime. What we have been having is early exposure.”

He added that the number of examination centres has been increased to reduce the travelling distance, which aided cheating in the past.
