Over five thousand residents of Kitui south have benefited from a water supply project funded by Kitui county government in partnership with Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB).

The water supply project dubbed SMEK(Syomisyi-Mesilya-enzou-ngunini-Kisayani), is meant to positively transform and better the livelihoods of at least 5,000 residents in the water- scarce region, as noted by Kitui county Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani.

Speaking during the official launch of the said project at Kisayani Maternity Unit in Ikanga-Kyatune ward, Kanani reiterated that installation of a state-of-the-art solar-powered sump well water pump, which also boasts both a substantial 3-meter diameter and 6-meter depth and impressive output of 22m³ per hour, now stands as a beacon of hope for the local community.

The state-of-the-art sump pumps are renown for their efficient capability to draw water from source including rivers, wells, dams as well as disseminate it to sparse populations.

Alongside the newly acquired and installed sump well water pump, the partnership has also constructed a 15.5-Km pipeline extension cutting across four villages (Syomisi, Mesilya, Enzou and Kisayani). Along its path, the pipeline also features three strategically placed water kiosks to ensure easy access for all homesteads.

The partnership water project has improved water supply up to door step of the over five thousand residents who depends on water from Nzeeu River and surrounding areas thus changing their livelihoods.

"The SMEK project stands as a cornerstone of Governor Malombe's ambitious 16-sector agenda, aimed at addressing three key areas of concern: healthcare, water access, and livestock," noted Kanani.

The Deputy Governor, further affirmed the county government's commitment to collaborating with development partners to improve the standard of living for its people. This fruitful partnership with CMMB is a testament to their dedication to progress and community well-being.

"Kitui South Constituency is largely known for biting water scarcity, but thanks to the County Government of Kitui for moving in swiftly to call off the ravaging menace that has troubled thousands of region's residents over the years," the deputy governor noted.

Mr Dick Day, representing the Catholic Medical Mission Board, reaffirmed their commitment to these partnerships and their mission to spearhead sustainable development projects that have a lasting impact on humanity.

This achievement marks a significant step forward in fulfilling The Kitui County Promise of progress, development, and improved living standards for all its residents. The successful collaboration between Kitui County and CMMB serves as a shining example of what can be achieved when government and development partners work together to make a positive impact on communities in need.
