A section of Persons with Disability (PWDs) in Embu have decried marginalization in governance and employment opportunities in successive governments in the devolved unit.

The group dubbed Community of Disabled Persons of Embu County (CoDPEC) affirmed that PWDs have been sidelined in appointments to political offices, employment opportunities and tender awards.

They also said they have been excluded in identification, planning, implementation and evaluation of development projects right from the ward level.

To cure this, the group called for implementation of the Disability Act of 2003 that among other provisions gives them the opportunity to develop together with other citizens in attainment of an all-inclusive government.

They applauded Governor Cecily Mbarire led administration that they said had taken some steps in bringing PWDs to the decision-making table which is a first since the advent of devolution.

Speaking during a press briefing in Embu Town, group Chairman Nyaga Cianyaga said governance can only be effective when all people are engaged taking into account gender, disability and other facets of personal identity.

Among the recommendations they made to the county government included implementing affirmative action for PWDs through meeting specific quotas for tenders and employment.

He also said early childhood development education should be made accessible to children with disabilities including employment and training of ECDE teachers in sign language, building accessible classes and sanitation facilities and providing learning and teaching aids.

He also said there was a need to train all county staff in disability equity and inclusion that will greatly contribute towards provision of accessible services to all citizens.

Group member Winfred Wanja said they want to feel appreciated by being given equal job opportunities like anybody else.
