Rangers' late rally beats St Mirren, derby delight for Hibs
Rangers struck three times in the final 10 minutes to finally get the better of St Mirren 5-2 at Ibrox, as Hibernian won the Edinburgh derby over Hearts 1-0 on Saturday.
Defeat by Celtic in the Old Firm derby last weekend all but ended Rangers' hopes of catching their Glasgow rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
But they at least delayed the Hoops' title celebrations by cutting the gap at the top to nine points.
James Tavernier took his tally of goals for Rangers to 100 last weekend, but had a penalty saved after just five minutes by Trevor Carson.
Todd Cantwell and Fashion Sakala put Rangers in front either side of half-time but Mark O'Hara twice brought the Buddies back level.
Alfredo Morelos appears to be coming towards the end of his time in Glasgow with the Colombian's contract up at the end of the season.
But he scored twice within a minute to end St Mirren's resistance before Scott Arfield rounded off the scoring.
"Mixed bag of a performance," said Rangers boss Michael Beale.
"The two goals against is a concern because they could've been stopped. Nothing against O'Hara's two strikes, they were both excellent, especially the first one, but we were sloppy in both moments and we have to be better than that."
Kevin Nisbet scored the winner at Easter Road as Hibs ensured they remain in pole position for a top-six finish with one game to go before the end-of-season split.
Hearts sacked manager Robbie Neilson earlier this week but failed to get the desired reaction as they slipped to a sixth straight defeat.
Nisbet pounced 23 minutes from time for the only goal after Paul Hanlon headed a corner into his path.
Livingston kept their chances of finishing in the top six alive by beating St Johnstone 2-0.
Dundee United moved off the bottom of the table and climbed to 10th place after a vital 2-1 win at Motherwell.
Celtic can extend their lead at the top back to 12 points when they travel to Kilmarnock on Sunday.
