English defender Reece James has said being made the new captain of Chelsea Football Club is a great honor and a matter of pride for him and his family.

In his statement on Wednesday evening, the 24-year-old player expressed gratitude to everyone who has supported him in his football career.

James also made a big promise to Chelsea fans that he is ready to dedicate himself to lead the club to win titles.

"Captain of Chelsea. It is a time of honor and pride for me and my family. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone who has helped in my journey.

This role is new to me but I will do everything to guide our club back to where we need to be. Winning titles. See you at Stamford Bridge,” James said in his statement.

On Wednesday, The Blues announced the right back as their new captain following the departure of Spaniard César Azpilicueta.

The 33-year-old player left Stamford Bridge last month and joined Atletico Madrid, a football club in his home country, Spain.

"Reece James has been officially confirmed as the new captain of Chelsea Football Club," read Chelsea's statement on Wednesday evening.

Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino was full of praise for the 24-year-old international player from England who has played for the club since 2018.

In his message, Pochettino emphasized that he is proud of his decision and said that he is delighted with James leading the club next season.

"He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout the preparation for the new season. He embraced the role during our summer tour and will take on the challenge of leading our squad with his tactics and ideas,” Pochettino said.
