Taylor Swift shined the Brightest winning four awards in the 40th MTV music videos Awards at the Prudential centre, New Jersey in star stunned event on Wednesday. 

Swift went ahead to win in every televised award she was nominated including winning the night’s top prize, video of the year, for her Midnights track Anti-Hero, as well as best direction, best pop video and song of the year.

The 33-year-old singer who is also currently on her Erus tour, the first billion - dollar stadium world tour in history, dedicated her wins to the art of songwriting as well as to presenters ‘NSync, who reunited for the first time in over a decade to give her one award, and her video editor Chancler Hanes and cinematographer Rina Yang, who spoke on Swift’s behalf for her video of the year win.

Additionally, her “Anti-Hero” video took home two technical prizes off-air (best cinematography and best visual effects).

As if being an Mcee wasn't daunting enough, Nicki Minaj went ahead to win an award, best hip-hop, for her track Super Freaky Girl. 

The event devoted portion of its nearly four-hour ceremony to celebrating 50 years of hip-hop, from a night-opening performance by Lil Wayne to the VMA debut of Metro Boomin to a finale medley featuring Doug E Fresh, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, LL Cool J, Darryl McDaniels of Run DMC, Lil Wayne and Minaj herself.

Mary J Blige presented the global icon award to Diddy, AKA Puff Daddy and Love, whose real name is Sean Combs. 

The VMAs also nodded to the global domination of Latin music from artists such as the Brazilian Anitta, who won best Latin for Funk Rave, Mexican breakout artist Peso Pluma, and Colombian singer Karol G, who became the first female artist to score a No 1 Spanish-language album with Mañana Será Bonito.

Karol G won for best collaboration with fellow Colombian Shakira, the night’s guest of honor, for their song TGQ. “She’s a legend. 

The Best new artist award went to Ice Spice – 10K Projects / Capitol Records. 

Best R&B song went to SZA for the jam “Shirt” which was produced by Top Dawg Entertainment / RCA Records

The MTV music awards also recognized Metallica for the Best rock award on his Lux Æterna” jam. 

Nigerian star Rema beat top names of Davido, Burnaboy and Wiz Kid to win the best Afro beats award which was also his first MTV award. 

Rema was awarded thanks to his "Calm Down" hit which featured American international celebrity Selena gomez. 

The Song has also reached a remarkable landmark after hitting the 1 billion stream mark in music streaming platform Spotify this week. 

Rema who received his award standing beside Selena gomez had been nominated for the awards alongside Ayra Starr for the hit "Rush", Burna Boy for his "It's Plenty" hit, Davido ft. Musss Keys for their "unbelievable" Jam, Fireboy DML & Asake for their "Bandana" song and Wiz kid ft Ayra Star "2 sugar"
