Report insecurity incidents for timely intervention, residents urged

Nyamira residents are being encouraged to report any security incidents to their nearest police stations or authorities for prompt assistance from security officers.

 County Commissioner, Onesmus Kyatha, noted that residents are reluctant to testify on arrested criminals, making it challenging for police to process their charges.  

“It is true that several incidents of insecurity have been reported. Ten profiled criminals have been arrested most of them being ex-convicts, who were released after the president’s amnesty directive. Unfortunately, there is no single resident who is willing to testify before a court of law including those who have been attacked alleging they fear repeated grievous attacks of revenge after these criminals have been released on cash bail or bond awaiting the verdict of their case,” he explained.

Traders and businesspeople are targeted by late-night attacks, theft, assault, and rape, with the worst incident occurring at Nyakenimo coffee society in Nyamira North Sub County, where hundreds of kilos of coffee berries were stolen, and assaulted and one of them axed dead.” narrated the county commissioner.

 He stated that county security team has put in place stringent measures to contain the insecurity situation which is dire, adding that crime by young people who overindulge in drugs and substance abuse and gambling is on the rise will be dealt with without fear or favour so that our people can operate and operate their businesses in a secure environment.

“We are collaborating with all administrative and security agencies to end this crime menace. I’m therefore appealing to members of the public to cooperate with us, give us information of people who execute these criminal activities or any other illegal engagements including brewing, selling and peddling illicit brews so that they are brought to book at once. Coffee societies should seek enhanced armed security whenever they are drying large chunks of coffee berries to curb theft incidents, which bring a lot of damage to the farmers who have invested in coffee farming,” he appealed.

Kyatha further appealed to residents to merry responsibly during this festive season, while warning against drunk driving to avoid accidents and loss of lives.

The county commissioner further advised parents to monitor their children’s movements to safeguard them from overindulgence in merrymaking for they are likely to cause unanticipated tragedies.
