The residents of Athiru Gaiti in Igembe South sub-county marched over 10km to Maua town where they staged demonstrations on Wednesday evening accusing the area leadership of negligence over an uncompleted road.
They argued that the Maua- Athirugaiti – Meru National Park road was launched in 2013 by the previous government.
Residents however lamented that the contractor who was awarded the tender tarmacked only 4km instead of the proposed 23km.
The angry masses engaged the police in running battles with the police being forced to use tear gas to disperse them.
The demonstrators paralyzed business within the town with many shops being temporarily closed and also barricaded Maua-Meru Road using logs and burning tyres.
Addressing the protestors at Maua stadium, the area Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Noah Kibet Tonui assured them that the road construction is in the pipeline adding that the government has already budgeted for the 23km road.
He further urged the residents to picket peacefully and not to disrupt other people’s businesses.
The DCC emphasized the need to abide by the law when demonstrating.
