Revealed: Names of 8 officers nominated for Deputy Inspector General slots

By Peter Ochieng

The race for the next Deputy Inspector General in charge of Kenya Police Service (DIG-KPS) and Deputy Inspector General Administration Police Service (DIG-APS) is firmly on.

On Friday, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) published a list of 8 candidates who will be interviewed to fill the vacant positions. The positions became vacant last week, after then DIG-KPS Douglas Kanja was appointed acting Inspector General of Police (IG) on the backdrop of Japhet Koome’s resignation, while then DIG-APS Noor Gabow was redeployed to the Public Service.

Those nominated for the position of DIG-KPS, according to NPSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Leley are George Adero Sedah, Eliud Kipkoech Lagat, Tom Mboya Odero and Dr. Vincent Kinas Makokha. Lagat is currently acting as DIG-KPS.

Gilbert Masengeli, Margaret Nyambura Karanja, James Mukuha Kamau and Dr. Masoud Mwinyi were nominated for the post of DIG-APS. Kamau is currently occupying the position, albeit in an acting capacity.

Interviews will take place at the Kenya School of Government in Kabete, on Monday, July 22, 2024 from 9:30 am. Candidates shortlisted for the post of DIG-KPS will be the first to face the panel, from 9.30am to 12.15pm, which means each candidate will have 30 minutes before the interviewing panel.

Nominees for the position of DIG-APS will then be grilled from 2:00 pm to 4:15 pm. NPSC said a total of 38 individuals applied for positions, following an advertisement by the Commission. 21 applied for the position of DIG-KPS, while 13 applied for the post of DIG-APS.

Paul Omondi Okinyi, Brian Wekesa Wanyonyi, Abdirashid Bilali and Nicholas Mwiti were dropped from the race, after failing to specify the positions they applied for.

Members of the public have since been urged to submit any information relating to the candidates through written memoranda, to the Commission’s chairperson or online on or before Monday next week.
