President William Ruto on Saturday presided over the 12th Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Day in Embakasi, Nairobi, in turn appreciating KDF officers for exemplary service.
Ruto awarded them 9, 000 housing units under the affordable housing program being implemented by the Kenya Kwanza administration, adding that it was the best way to celebrate the soldiers.
“Last week, we completed the procurement process in three different barracks to build 9, 000 units of houses for our KDF,” said the Head of State.
“Our defence forces have accomplished much more than defence and security. They have crafted a fine legacy that transcends success and defines true patriotism, unity, perseverance, resilient and discipline,” he added.
He thanked KDF for setting the bar very high, as far as dealing with Kenya’s security threats is concerned.
“Our confidence is not because yesterday’s threats and challenges were simple or easier, rather we are confidence because our standards are high and we are now more prepared than ever before.”
The president then awarded five individual soldiers for fantastic service. He said regional and continental collaborations are key in ensuring that peace and stability previous.
“Our neighbourhood’s security, stability and development is our security and prosperity. Our continent peace and growth is our safety and progress. Working together therefore, is strategic common sense at all levels.”
Chief of Defence Forces Francis Ogolla said that observance of the KDF day is not just a tradition. He said the day is used to celebrate soldiers and relieve some of the challenges they experience while protecting the country.
"Our observance of KDF day holds deep rooted significance in our national memory. The seed of this commemoration were sown back in October 2011 when our soldier’s launched Operation Linda Nchi,” he added.
Operation Linda Nchi refers to Kenyan soldiers’ engagement in tackling Al – Shabaab militants in Somalia.
