Raila meets US Senator, agrees to keep communication channels open
Azimio La Umoja One Kenya leader, Raila Odinga on Wednesday evening held a meeting with United States of America (USA) Senator Chris Coons.
Odinga in a statement said during the meetinh, they discussed political developments in Kenya, in the face of opposition protests against the government.
"Had a great meeting with US Senator Chris Coons and his delegation to discuss political developments in our country," Odinga said.
The US and other foreign nations are reportedly highly involved in seeking for a political truce between Odinga and President William Ruto.
During the meeting with Coons, Odinga said they agreed to keep their communication channels open.
"We had a fruitful discussion on the importance of upholding the constitution and the rule of law in all activities, and agreed to keep the channels of communication open."
The ODM party has called for protests every Monday and Thursday to try and force the hand of the government into lowering the cost of living, openning IEBC 2022 presidential servers and suspending the process of recruiting new IEBC chairperson and commissioners.
So far, three people have died in Kisumu, scores injured among them police officers and a host of others arrested during the protests.
Odinga insists that he is not pushing for a handshake with President Ruto as was the case with former Head of State, Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017.
He maintains that he is fighting for the rights of Kenyans.
On the other hand, President William Ruto, his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua and their foot soldiers in Kenya Kwanza have maintained that they will be blackmailed into a handshake.
Religious leaders in the country led by Catholic bishops are also pushing for Ruto-Odinga dialogue.
Senator Coons also met Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
