President William Ruto on Tuesday, during a function at State House, Nairobi granted charters to two new universities.
National Intelligence and Research University College (NIRUC) and the Islamic University of Kenya are the new kids on the block, joining a list of over 60 universities in the country.
NIRUC has all along been operating as one of the seven constituent colleges of the National Defense University Kenya (NDU-K).
President Ruto said the awarding of charters signifies his administration’s commitment to societal advancement. “These charters are not only recognition but also a commitment to societal advancement through high-quality research and innovation,” he stated.
“I urge you to educate professionals who will drive our nation's transformation to position Kenya as a regional and global hub of intellectual and technological advancement,” added the President.
He said NIRUC's focus would also be consistent with Kenya's Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which lays emphasis to the importance of technology and research in national development. On the other hand, the Islamic University of Kenya is expected to instill inclusivity and ethical values in its students.
“We are broadening the provision of university learning in the recognition that quality, accessible, affordable and relevant education is the engine of our country’s development,” he indicated.
On his part, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said the National Intelligence and Research University will play a pivotal role, in preparing intelligence professionals who will provide solid and knowledge-based solutions on sustainability of the country’s safety, security and development now and in the years ahead.
He challenged the Islamic University of Kenya and all other faith-based established universities, to continuously ensure that people who are in the education space, especially those that have a faith inclination, help the government and the people of Kenya to ensure that scholars who teach religion or articulate education values that are anchored on religion, are well trained.
Ruto will serve as NIRUC’s inaugural Chancellor.
