Ruto, Raila given 10 days to name running mates

It is now a race against time for Deputy President (DP) William Samoei Ruto, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga and other presidential candidates to name their running mates, by April 28, 2022.
This means they only have 10 days to name the people most likely, to serve in the position of DP after the August 09, 2022 polls.
This is according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati, who spoke to The Star.

“We expect to know their running mates on the date when they submit names of the nominated candidates...either themselves as independent candidates or through the party, if a political party candidate, this being April 28,” he said.
According to IEBC timelines ahead of the August general elections, April 28 is the date set for the presentation of presidential candidates vying on independent tickets.
All Parties who intend to field presidential candidates should have a clear presidential flag bearer by June 10, 2022. This is the date initially expected that presidential candidates would name their running mates.
“It doesn't mean we are going to wait until the deadline but we will work with the timelines [in the law],” Professor Makau Mutua, spokesperson of Raila's campaign team said of naming Odinga's running mate.
However, in DP Ruto's camp, they claim to be ready to declare a running mate anytime.
“We have 11 days up to April 28 at 5 o'clock by close of business. A day in politics is like a year and 1,000 years in politics is like one day. We are content with the date,” said Johnson Muthama, UDA Chairman.
