Ruto: We must say no to violence

By Peter Ochieng

President William Ruto is urging Kenyans of good will to remain steadfast, and say no to what he branded as violent protests called by the opposition.

Opposing leaders and their supporters are on the streets for the second day running, in demos called by Azimio leader Raila Odinga against the high cost of living among others grievances.

Speaking in Isiolo County on Thursday afternoon, President Ruto said this country is the only place to call home, warning against the urge to destroy it.

"Kenya is the only place we can call home. We must protect it," said the Head of State.

"We cannot sabotage our economy using violence," he added.

He commended police officers for their efforts in quelling violent protests.

Residents of Isiolo he was addressing briefly stopped him with chants of "Hatutaki maandamano (We do not want demonstrations)."

Despite a pat on the back by the President, police officers have been accused of brutality in dealing with rioters.

On Wednesday, over 5 people died and scores injured after being shot during the first day of the three-day anti-government demos.
