Prof Makau Mutua, the Spokesperson of the Raila Odinga 2022 presidential campaign team has cautioned Kenyans against electing Deputy President William Ruto as the country’s next president.
Prof. Mutua, in a column on the Daily Nation, notes that the DP is “totally unfit to be President of the Republic of Kenya”.
Ruto is seeking to vie for the presidency under the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, which also has Amani National Congress (ANC), Ford Kenya, and Chama cha Kazi as other parties in the alliance.

This is the first time the DP is vying for the presidency and he is considered a front runner for the seat alongside Azimio la Umoja coalition’s Raila Odinga.
But according to Makau Mutua, it will be a mistake if Kenyans voted in DP Ruto at the expense of the former Prime Minister.
“The two key horses in the race – Mr Odinga and Mr Ruto – are as starkly different as night and day. The former represents our better angels, the latter our worst proclivities,” notes the scholar in his column.
One of the reasons Makau Mutua says makes DP Ruto is unfit for the presidency is the lack of vision for the country.
The DP is popularizing his presidential bid using the bottom-up economic agenda he plans to roll out under his government – a model the scholar dismisses.
“Truth be told, Mr Ruto doesn’t have a clue as to why he wants to be President. His politics is completely transactional and devoid of any philosophy or ideology. The man is visionless and to the extent he has a vision, you’d be better advised not to buy it,” he notes.
Another reason that makes Mutua come to a conclusion that the second in command is not fit for the presidency is what he described as his inability to tackle corruption.
He argues that the DP’s reign is scattered with scandals that will make it hard for him to end graft.
“Mr Ruto’s unfitness for election to State House goes beyond his scandals. The man doesn’t have a democratic bone in his body. He was a key cog in the Kanu dictatorship under Moi. He was among the Kanu and state officials who suppressed the fight for democracy and the Second Liberation. He fought tooth and nail against the realisation of the 2010 Constitution,” notes Makau Mutua.
