Samburu West MP calls for reasoned debate over impeachment
By Robert Mutasi
Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda has declared her opposition to some of the utterances by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, threatening retrogressive divisions.
However, she strongly feels that such utterances are not worth an impeachment, with a more reasonable measure being debate or a motion of censure.
"I strongly disagree with some of the utterances of the Deputy President, particularly those seemingly made to drive and increase divisions in our country. I don't, however, think these utterances reach the threshold of impeachment. Such opinions, in my view, are better contested on the floor through reasoned debate or via a motion of censure," said Lesuuda.
This is just days after Kibwezi West MP Mutuse Mwengi tabled a motion seeking to impeach the Deputy President, Gachagua.
Though the motion has elicited mixed political debate, Lesuuda argued that in choosing political battles, especially where national leadership is concerned, great caution must be applied.
Lesuuda recalled past political events, among them the impeachment of former Majority Leader Aden Duale.
Despite this, Duale later survived and became a Cabinet Secretary.
"We have watched examples from our history, such as the impeachment of the then Majority Leader Hon. Aden Duale who later got re-elected and is now a Cabinet Secretary. Those are experiences that remind us that political positions change," she commented.
Lesuuda further reflected on her political journey and lessons learnt over the years.
An elected MP under the Azimio coalition, she expressed her stand of not interfering in the internal politics of the Kenya Kwanza administration, especially on matters that involve leadership.
"I have learned the hard way when to pick battles, bearing in mind that it is an existential one, something that has stuck with me through the years. To me, as elected MP under the Azimio coalition, it is my view that Kenya Kwanza chose President Ruto and Deputy President Gachagua as their candidates for the top seats, which they went ahead to occupy. However, I am not involved in the internal decisions or political rifts within their camp; frankly, that does not concern me," she explained.
