Sewage, stones used to block Nyamira County Assembly entrance

Staff of the Nyamira County Assembly on Tuesday woke up to a rare spectacle.

They arrived at work only to find the entrance of the Assembly blocked by raw sewage and stones, ahead of tabling of a motion seeking to impeach governor Amos Nyaribo.

They were, with the help of Assembly guards, forced into clearing the mess as hawk eyed police patrolled the area.

It is not clear the people behind the move. The motion is expected to be tabled on Tuesday afternoon, with about 24 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) supporting the bid to impeach Nyaribo.

Julius Matwere, Bomanyamatuta MCA is among legislatures backing the bid to oust the county boss. He says they will not be intimidated into submission.

''We know they have planned all manner of chaos on Tuesday but we want to urge them to respect our constitutional mandate. Our officers have done a commendable job so far, we want to be given a secure environment to work without any interference,'' said the MCA.

The Nyamira County Assembly consists of 36 MCAs. The motion must get the support of at least 23 of them to sail through.

Last week, some 24 MCAs out of the less than 40 did sign the impeachment motion.

If impeached, Nyaribo will become the second governor to be shown the door by MCAs after Meru's Kawira Mwangaza.

She was however saved by the Senate. Nyamira MCAs want to see the back of Nyaribo, because 'he has been abusing his authority.'
