Siaya to host inter-counties boxing tournament

More than 50 boxers will over the weekend converge in Siaya town for the inter-counties boxing tournament.

According to the Siaya boxing club head coach Joseph Ochieng Otieno alias Diffo, the tournament will bring together boxers from seven counties in Nyanza and Western regions.

Speaking to the media at his club’s training venue at Oseno Komollo primary school, the coach said that the tournament will also be used to prepare boxers for the Olympics trials cum selection that is slated for Nairobi next year.

He said that the tournament will also offer the recently trained referees and judges from western region an opportunity to practice the skills they learnt.

“We will no longer have to rely on officials from Nairobi to officiate games in the western and Nyanza regions following the training of referees and judges from these regions,” he said.

Coach Diffo said that the tournament will involve all the 13 weight categories and will be played in an open ground and called on Siaya residents to turn up in large numbers to cheer the local boys.

He called local county governments and well-wishers to help sponsor such events that also provide a platform for talent development.

Among the counties that have already confirmed participation, he said, are Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu, Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia and hosts, Siaya.

Light middleweight boxer, Stephen Odhiambo and his colleague, Eric Ochieng Otieno said that the Siaya team was well prepared to face their opponents. They promised fans a good fight, exuding confidence that Siaya will carry the day.
