The giant Dock Workers Union (DWU) has asked the government to start afresh the process of putting the ports of Mombasa and Lamu under port concession.
The government says port concession promises to increase trade between Kenya and landlocked countries of Uganda, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Ethiopia and the rest of the world.
In concession the ports of Mombasa and Lamu will be a landlord port and grants concessions. That means that the port authority owns or manages the land and gives it to companies for temporary use.
If you want to invest or carry out an industrial activity in the port area, you need to take an available site under concession.
When the Port Authority wishes to grant a site in concession, a call for tenders will be organized.
Weighing in on the debate, the dock workers have faulted the government for failing to conduct public participation before advertising the process to improve trade prospects.
