Bungoma County Teachers’ Service Commission Director Wilson Koros has faulted students who destroy school property after getting incited by their disgruntled teachers.
In an interview with KNA in his office Monday, Koros said that Bungoma was leading in cases of school unrest and currently more than 30 schools have been affected.
However, Koros said according to investigations conducted by TSC, KNUT and KUPPET, most grievances recorded touched on non- teaching and teaching staff, saying the latter have been discovered to be the real perpetrators of school unrests.
The Director said delocalization had contributed a lot to school disturbances, adding that teachers who have been posted to far- flung counties and away from their homes were coming back and demanding to be handed over administrative positions.
It is evident that teachers are coming from other counties and demanding to be the heads of institutions in Bungoma, a move that arouses mixed reaction from both parents, students and teachers,” Koros noted.
He said the probe further revealed that some teachers have been hiring goons to frog match administrators out of the institutions under unclear circumstances.
However, the county director said that there have also been incidents of Board of Management (BOM) teachers working against the school principal, a move that also causes division in the school.
Consequently, there has been complaints from several principals who face threats from unknown persons including BOM teachers and non-teaching staff.
Among the schools that have been greatly affected in Bungoma include Namwela boys’ high school, Bungoma high school and Maliki boys’ high school
Koros is therefore calling on school principals to take disciplinary action and report to the Teachers Service Commission teachers implicated in issues that affect institutions negatively.
“The work of the teachers is to impart learners with knowledge and train them how to become good people in the community,” he said.
In addition, Koros asked politicians to support schools and fulfil the pledges they made to school during campaigns.
At the same time, the Director asked teachers to observe professionalism, while executing their duties and stick to the teaching standards.
He said that the commission, in collaboration with other stakeholders has commenced sensitization in local schools on how to improve performance.
