The Kiambu Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) is seeking the support of Kiambu residents and the police service, in a bid to cut the supply chain of illegal pharmaceuticals and eradicate operations of illegal pharmacies in Kiambu.

Speaking to KNA, Kiambu Pharmaceutical Inspector at pharmacy and Poisons board (PPB) Humphrey Mbogori said that the fight to eradicate illegal pharmacies and other malpractices has yielded fruit and the number of cases has gradually reduced in recent times.

“The board aims to promote the health of the public by regulating the profession of pharmacy and ensuring access to quality health,” said Mbogori.

According to cap 244, Act of parliament, it regulates the manufacture, prescription and use of, and trade in, drugs and poisons used for human beings and animals and in agriculture and other activities.

The Act also highlights the provisions for the control of the profession of pharmacy and the trade in drugs and poisons.

Mbogori called on the public to ensure they purchase drugs only from registered outlets adding that chemists bearing no names on display or without signage are a key indicator of illegal pharmaceutical products.

“Our operation aims to investigate, prosecute and report on illegal pharmaceutical outlets in all Sub counties in Kiambu County,” he added.

He urged the members of the public to volunteer information of any suspected practitioners and outlets via their online platform for legal action to be taken.

Kiambu County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha told KNA that the frequent crackdowns and the collaborative approach taken by the PPB which has seen them engage the Kenya Police Service, NGAOs, the judiciary and members of the public in stemming the vice has been bearing fruits

He expressed optimism that the commitment of the police service and PPB to form a joint inspection exercise to intensify surveillance on illegal pharmaceutical outlets in Kiambu is the way to go.
