The national government disburses Sh48.3 monthly to 24, 142 beneficiaries through the Inua Jamii Cash Transfer (CT) programme in Vihiga county.

Beneficiaries comprise 17, 372 Older Persons (OPs) of 70 years and above, 5, 905 Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and 865 Persons with Severe Disabilities (PWSDs) who receive Sh2, 000 stipend every month for upkeep.

Vihiga County Commissioner (CC) Felix Watakila, who spoke while launching the second phase of registration, said 4,153 OVCs, 490 PWSDs and a substantial number of older persons are to be enlisted into the programme.

The CC explained that all older persons would be registered, adding that the government intends to recruit 500, 000 beneficiaries nationally during the 15-day exercise.

The area Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo said his administration will continue to maintain a cordial working relationship with the national government for the benefit of the Vihiga residents.

“We strongly support the national government’s social welfare initiatives and our officers will work hand in hand with their counterparts to ensure the success of the programmes,” he stated.

Dr. Ottichilo observed that the two levels of government are supposed to complement each other in the process of service delivery and implementation of development projects.

The County Director for Social Services (CDSS) Kennedy Masese explained that in order for one to register as an OP, they need a national identification card or a waiting slip.

Masese added that for the OVCs, they need birth certificates or notification slip while the PWSDs have to produce identification document from the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWDs).
