Three Machakos based journalists were on Monday attacked by suspected illicit brew dealers while on duty in Katine, Matungulu sub county.

The journalists had been called by local residents to visit the chang'aa den and highlight the trade when they were ambushed by the brewers at around 10 am at Ngomeni village.

They were however not accompanied by any local administrator or police.

The three, Mike Ndunda of Kamba TV, Richard Muasya (Athiani FM) and Boniface Mutisya(Mutongoi TV)sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Ruai Hospital in Tala.

The vehicle they were traveling in was also extensively damaged.

Machakos Association of Journalists Chairperson Erastus Mulwa has condemned the incident saying it's an attack on freedom of the media.

"We condemn strongly the incident and call upon the police to arrest the culprits and bring them to book," said Mulwa.

County Police Commander Patrick Lobolia while confirming the incident said two suspects have been arrested and will be arraigned in court tomorrow.

Lobolia however noted that such sensitive operations should be accompanied by police.

"If there is any operation, police should be included or the area chief. That's why they were attacked," he said.
